Costco price adjustment: the 30-day window, explained

Costco's price-adjustment story is really its return-policy story wearing a different hat: the electronics adjustment window is 30 days, other categories ride on return windows that often run longer, and there are no coupon codes to untangle because Costco doesn't use them. Here's how the window works and the one check to make before you ask.

The 30-day electronics window

For electronics, Costco documents a 30-day window from delivery during which it will refund the difference if its own price drops. The clock is the return-period clock, and the claim is straightforward: your receipt (or membership-linked order history — every Costco purchase is tied to your card), the current lower Costco price, and a request through the membership desk or customer service inside the window.

The adjustment tracks Costco's own price — a competitor's lower price (including warehouse-vs-warehouse differences at other chains) doesn't trigger it. Costco also doesn't price-match competitors; the adjustment is the only price-drop mechanism it runs.

Costco: the window, from the dataset

30 days

Policy: Price adjustment (own store)

Costco adjusts to its own lower price within 30 days for electronics; most other categories carry a 90-day return window.

Category note: 30 days is the electronics figure — other categories ride on their own (often longer) return windows rather than a single adjustment clock; the item's category governs your specific purchase.

The category difference is the fine print

The 30-day figure is the electronics number, and quoting it for a non-electronics purchase is where claims go wrong: other categories ride on Costco's category return windows (which for general merchandise run longer than 30 days, and for some categories run on the lifetime-of-membership satisfaction policy instead). The practical rule: find the item's category return window first — the adjustment rides it, whichever direction it runs.

How to claim it

  1. Find it in your order history. The membership card makes every purchase findable — no paper receipt required (though the warehouse desk takes those too).
  2. Confirm the drop is Costco's own. Same item, same warehouse or costco.com listing, current price lower than what you paid.
  3. Ask inside the window — membership desk or customer service; the refund goes back to the original payment method.
