Black Friday 2026: when deals start and how to plan your stack
Every year, media roundups rewrite the same advice with no data underneath. This page takes the opposite approach: the documented 2025 sale windows from the four biggest events, the early-access patterns each retailer has actually run, and a stack planner so you can price a deal before checkout. No 2026 date predictions — the 2025 record plus each retailer's own announcements are the only honest basis for planning.
When do Black Friday deals start?
The short answer, based on how 2025 actually ran: weeks before the day itself. Every major retailer now runs named pre-Black-Friday events, and the "official" Black Friday window is the peak of a season that starts in early November. The table below is the documented 2025 calendar — the single best predictor of how 2026 will be structured, until each retailer publishes its own schedule (historically announced through October).
2025 sale calendar, side by side
Every documented 2025 window from the four big-box events we track. Filter by event type. This is a historical record — for the current season, check each retailer's official deals page.

2026 schedule: TBA — retailers announce event dates in October and early November. When they do, this table's structure (how many windows, which channels, how early access slots in) is the template they have historically followed.
Early access: how it has worked
Early access is now the main way loyalty programs plug into the Black Friday season — but the terms differ more than the marketing suggests, based on the documented 2025 pattern:
- Target Circle members have historically gotten first access to Black Friday week deals before the general public (2025 pattern — re-confirm with Target's own announcements for 2026).
- Best Buy ran its sale windows on parallel online and in-store tracks, with My Best Buy members getting first access to select doorbusters in past seasons.
- Amazon runs Lightning Deals through the window, with some offers gated to Prime members (re-confirm — the mix changes each season).
The mechanism matters more than the membership: early access effectively moves the deepest stock-limited deals earlier, so the planning question is not "which day do I shop" but "which window does my membership actually unlock." Each retailer's program terms live on its rule sheet in our retailer rules library.
Plan the stack before the queue
Black Friday is when stacking rules bite hardest, because that's when every layer is in play at once — event pricing, store offers, manufacturer coupons, and cashback. Three steps, before checkout:
- Anchor the original price. Note the item's normal price yourself (your own purchase history, or the retailer's stated original price) — event "was" prices are set by the seller and can flatter the discount. Our electronics deal check walks through this in detail.
- Apply the layers in the retailer's order. Whether the order changes your final price is a stacking-rules question, not a math one — percentages multiply the same either way. The rules per retailer are in how to stack coupons.
- Price the stack before you queue. Run the numbers below — a 20% coupon on top of a 30% event discount is not 50% off.
Stack it yourself
Black Friday edition: put the event discount and your coupon percentages in — the result is the true final price.
Discounts multiply, not add: 20% + 20% is 36% off, not 40%.
Thanksgiving Day store calendars differ
Not everyone opens on the day before Black Friday. Costco, for example, has historically kept its warehouses closed on Thanksgiving and started its Black Friday sales the following morning (as of its published 2025 holiday calendar) — which means its "doorbusters" are an in-person Friday-morning event rather than a Thursday-night online drop. Other retailers open earlier each year, online first. The lesson for planning: the Thursday-evening scramble is one retailer's schedule, not the season's — check the specific retailer's holiday hours page before you plan a midnight run.
Checklist: before you click buy
- Price anchor: do you know the item's normal price from your own record?
- Adjustment window: if the price drops after you buy, can you get the difference? (Windows per retailer: see our appliance price-protection guide.)
- Exclusions: doorbuster and event-priced items are often excluded from price matching and coupons.
- Membership layer: is the price the general-public price, or a member price that ends when the promotion does?
- Official page: event dates and hours change — the retailer's own deals page is the only authoritative schedule.
